BOSCO Yuvodaya situated at Gandhinagar serves as an open shelter for the children on the streets and young at risk. This centre was opened on January 31, 1989. It serves as a day -night open shelter. Bosco Yuvodaya also acts as a transit home for around 30 children on a daily basis, those rescued from the Railway station, Bus stand and the various contact points at the streets of Bangalore. The children who are brought here from all over the city especially from the railway station and bus stand are counseled, their problems are analyzed and are encouraged to return to their homes.

This centre acts as a halfway home to street children below 15 years who are persuaded to come away from the streets. At this centre, boys enjoy maternal/paternal care, affection, concern and true fellowship.Some of the them are referred to other institutions for formal education while others attend training in carpentry, welding, two wheeler repairs, tailoring, electrical and bookbinding. At present there are about 80 boys residing in the centre. Besides, Mane serves as a convalescing centre from 1986 for the sick boys from the areas that require special care.

BOSCO Yuvakendra, situated in Magadi Road, has been rendering its services to the street and working youth for the past 10 years. It is the first of seven centers of BOSCO in Bangalore. It concentrates on youth between the age group of 14-18 years. It is mainly for youth, who require support to secure employment, apprenticeship or acquire a vocational skill leading to job placement. Efforts are made to place them back in their homes or find an independent living. Boys staying at Yuvakendra also assist in the kitchen and maintain the centre. Provision for self-cooking and space for safe keeping of personal belongings are also available at the centre. It serves as a residential rehabilitation centre, a centre for job placement, room placement, home placement, and day-and-night open shelter. Other activities of the centre include provision for working boy, boys who are undergoing vocational training or apprenticeship, and those new to the street. Literacy classes, skill training in screen printing and assistance to complete their secondary school examinations are also available at the centre.

BOSCO Sumanahalli is one of the new rehabilitation centers of BOSCO opened in 2006. The focus of this centre is mainly offering vocational training. On 5th March, 2011, BOSCO started Rainbow home for girl children in partnership with Partnership Foundation, Netherlands which now stands under Rainbow Foundations India (RFI). The goal of the Rainbow home is to provide holistic development formation to girls who live either on the streets or in difficult family environments with no way to enjoy their rights as children. There are 71 children between the age of 3 yrs to 14 years residing at BOSCO rainbow home. Prior to admission in formal school, the children at Rainbow home undergo a bridge course during which the children receive spiritual formation, value education, socio-cultural formation, and psychophysical development. During the Bridge course, the children get counseling, periodical health check-up, outings, talent enhancement trainings and indoor games. The bigger girls get opportunity to develop their leadership qualities and participate in decision-making in matters related to the management of the home. In the Rainbow Home, a day starts with yoga and exercises. The children are divided into groups consisting of three members. It’s called as three sister’s committee. The small parliament looks after the minute needs of each individual. The enhancement of leadership enables the children to take up the responsibilities in the given time and space.

Beneath the achievements of the IT hub of India, there lay plenty of issues related to girl children. Hundreds of girl children across the country leave their homes or live in deplorable conditions due to varied reasons and some of these vulnerable children land in Bangalore city and subsequently end up living on the streets, subjected to exploitations like trafficking, kidnap, begging, sexual abuse, harassment and child labour. Keeping this in mind…….. BOSCO Vatsalya Bhavan is the one and only transit centre cum shelter home exclusively for the girl children at risk of Bangalore was inaugurated on the 06th February 2014. The newly established shelter home is to mainstream girl children in need of care and protection after addressing the various needs and initiating long term interventions through family reunification, education and vocational training. The centre cater various needs of the girl children being victimized in a professional manner to come out of their trauma and leading them to their holistic and integral growth and development. The centre would encompass activities like receiving the children from the streets/other vulnerable pockets round the clock, meeting their basic needs, health care, counseling services and other psycho social interventions, education both formal and non formal, family unification and follow up, advocacy, referral services, job placement etc. The above services would be provided based on the individual cases keeping in mind ‘the best interest of the child’ and the short and long term goals set for the child.
